The digital signature is one of the cornerstones of the process of e-government. They can acquire a digital signature to all individuals as individuals, directors and employees of companies and public administrations.
To acquire digital signature is necessary to apply to accredited certifiers: public and private entities that have obtained permission to perform this work. The list of such persons shall, by law, published on the website of CNIPA. In mid-2008 there were more than 3.2 million digital signature devices.
Italy is at the forefront in the use of legal digital signature, being the first country to have given full legal effect to electronic documents as far back as 1997 and that with more widespread in Europe.
